Is it Worth it?
As I watch the unfolding drama in the Gulf of Mexico, I cannot help but feel sick. I mean literally sick to the point where I can almost throw up… I am not a wus or at all what I would call a tree hugger, but the more I see, the more I want to become one. The earth is a beautiful place and the truth is we are ruining it. I am glad that we live in a free country with abundant energy and I realize the importance of it, but I have to ask myself if it is worth it, especially when inevetability is always present.
If you build something that can cause an ecological disaster, it will cause one eventually.
I am so sad about what is going on I can barely stand it. I am literally losing sleep at night thinking about the beauty that is beind destroyed. This is not something that will go away anytime soon and our hunger for cheap energy has put us at what I believe to be GREAT RISK!
We have shown what an ecological disaster one oil well can be and we have hundreds of them dispersed throughout this region and thousands of them around the world.
My question is a simple one…
Is it worth it?
Can we not sacrifice our comfort a little bit for the sake of our world and our children?
Look, I am a conservative who believes in freedom and if you would have asked me two months ago what my opinion of offshore drilling and the oil industry was, my answer would have been far different.
I believe in freedom and free enterprise, but I can also see that this world we are living in is filled with deception.
Do we really need to have all of this modern convenience by sacrificing the beauty of this planet?
Is it really something that is going to benefit us in the long run?
Life is short and all energy does is speed it up.
To be honest I am really kind of wishing I could go back to a simpler time where the water was pure and the air was clean. I do not want to be melodramatic, but I am hurting inside because of what I see. Like I said, it makes me sick.
Nature is a gift that should be cherished and not taken for granted. The birds, fish and other wildlife should be protected at all costs because they in essence are our future. Oil and energy are not worth sacrificing our planet.
I am creating this website so that people can share their frustration, mourne our loss and stimulate discussion about what we should be focused on in the future. I'm a Christian man who has a wife and daughter I love very much. I know that things will probably get worse before they get better. I also know that I must stand for what I believe is truly right and I regret to say that my past philosophy of just a couple of months ago could not have been further from what I now know to be true. That is selfish pursuit of one's own interest above the interests of the world is the wrong philosophy. I no longer care about cheap energy or luxury because what does it matter if we do not have a world for our great-grandchildren to experience 100 years from now? Our job is to be good stewards of the earth and not put it at risk for the sake of the market for what amount to be short-term gains. I am blathering on but want people to understand my sadness about what I see and the helplessness I feel when I turn on the TV.
